Deer’s Leap Retreat Wedding Photographer
As a Deer’s Leap Retreat wedding photographer, it’s always a pleasure to return to one of Somerset’s most relaxed and unique countryside wedding venues. Nestled within rolling hills and overlooking a beautiful lake, Deer’s Leap Retreat offers the perfect setting for couples looking for a laid-back wedding surrounded by nature.
Nina and Dean chose this stunning venue for their June wedding, bringing together family and friends from both England and Austria for a weekend of celebrations.
Bridal & Groom Preparations at Deer’s Leap Retreat
The day began with preparations across the venue. Dean got ready with his groomsmen in one of the cosy cottages on site, while Nina and her bridesmaids were getting ready in the beautiful bridal suite.
There was an incredibly fun atmosphere throughout the morning as everyone prepared for the day ahead. With family travelling from both England and Austria, the excitement and anticipation made the morning feel even more special.
One of the things I love about photographing weddings at Deer’s Leap Retreat is how everything is located in one place. With cottages on site, couples and their guests can settle in for the entire weekend, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that feels more like a holiday with loved ones than a formal, structured event.
Lakeside Ceremony at Deer’s Leap Retreat
The ceremony took place at the stunning lakeside gazebo, one of the most iconic spots at Deer’s Leap Retreat. Guests were seated under the open-sided ceremony space overlooking the water, creating a beautiful and intimate setting.
As Nina walked down the aisle with her bridesmaids, one of Dean’s groomsmen played the piano, adding a personal and emotional touch to the moment.
After the ceremony, we organised a confetti tunnel for Nina and Dean. Surrounded by cheering guests throwing dried flower petals, it was the perfect way to begin the celebrations.
Drinks Reception by the Lake
Guests then gathered outside for drinks and canapés while enjoying the views across the Somerset countryside. Some of the canapés even included Austrian flags — a lovely personal touch.
The weather cleared just in time for the drinks reception, allowing everyone to relax outdoors while I captured natural, candid moments between family and friends.
Speeches & Wedding Breakfast in the Barn
The wedding breakfast took place inside the beautifully converted barn at Deer’s Leap Retreat. Speeches were delivered before the meal, bringing plenty of laughter and a few emotional moments as Nina and Dean’s loved ones shared stories from throughout their lives.
After dinner, guests were treated to signature cocktails chosen by the couple — a London Mule for Nina and an Espresso Martini for Dean — as everyone gathered in anticipation of the evening celebrations.
A Surprise Rap to Start the Evening Party
As the evening began, a six-piece band prepared to start the party. Nina and Dean stepped onto the dance floor for what appeared to be a traditional first dance.
However, in a surprise moment that nobody expected — myself included — they were suddenly handed microphones and sunglasses and launched into a rap together about how they met and their journey as a couple.
It was such a unique and fun moment to photograph, instantly bringing laughter and energy into the room and getting everyone straight onto the dance floor to start the evening celebrations.
